December Athlete of the Month!

Tell us about yourself---age, family, where you're from, etc:

My name is Monica (everyone calls me Moni). I am 29 years old, and originally from Honduras (Central America). I am a true believer that people meet for a reason; regardless of the time spent, we can make an impact and inspire others and vice versa. Love brought me to Clarksville TN (Hi Mandy, I Love You). Ergon gave Amanda and I a family in Clarksville.

When did you start CrossFit and why?

I started my CrossFit journey in 2017 in Honduras. Sports have always been a part of who I am. They are where I channel all my emotions, good and bad, and turn them into positive energy to keep going. Fitness has played a key role in my life; I even meet my soulmate at Crossfit. I always tackle my professional and life challenges with the same determination, discipline, and hard work that I put into every training session.

I played volleyball for the Honduran National team for 7 years before retiring. After competing at such a high level, I was looking for something that challenged and motivated me, as well as brought me close to amazing people. Crossfit has done that for me.

What are your favorite and least favorite movements and why?

My favorite movements are cleans. I enjoy that it involves all of your body in such simple yet challenging movement.

My least favorite are burpees. I am tall, and getting up quickly after laying on the floor for no good reason is not meant for us.

How do you stay motivated to keep on your journey?

I once read something that inspired me deeply: “We may not always feel motivated and shall not wait to feel motivated to start doing something. Motivation comes with action not the other way around.”

I always keep this in mind and try to live by it. Every day is different, and I adjust accordingly while showing up for myself. Love is a key component to my motivation to take care of myself to live a long happy life with my beautiful wife, enjoy the small moments together.

What advice would you have for newer athletes joining the box?

Be patient with yourself; this is not a sprint, but a journey. Take baby steps, baby steps. Lean on your community when you feel like you are struggling; we are here to push you, encourage you and support you in fitness and life. Your journey is a sum of all the little and big efforts you make along the way. Celebrate every step of this journey.

Any other thoughts, encouragement, advice?

Never let your fears stop you from achieving your full potential; try, fail, and try again. Learn from your mistakes, move on, and grow strong physically and mentally.
