What to Expect When You Attend Your First CrossFit Class

So you’ve decided to start CrossFit… you found a local gym, reserved a time to drop-in, now what?

If you’ve experienced global gyms (i.e. Gold’s Gym, Planet Fitness, Crunch Fitness, etc.) you may not be sure exactly what to expect. While we can’t speak for the protocols of all CrossFit gyms, here’s a little breakdown of a typical class at Ergon Elite Fitness!

  • When you walk through the door, the coach on staff for that class will greet you, show you where to place your belongings, and ask about your background in fitness (If you have, or had, any injuries, now is the perfect time to mention it to the coach!).

  • About 10 minutes prior to class, our regular members will begin to arrive and gather the necessary equipment, based on the workout on the whiteboard, and the programming we write in the Wodify app.

  • Our coaches are purposely punctual, utilizing the class time to the best of their abilities to optimize your experience. We offer classes at 5AM, 7AM, 9AM, take a break for open gym during the middle portion of the day, then classes resume in the afternoon at 4:30PM, and 5:45PM, with 7PM being the last class of the day.

  • Once class begins, we will gather at the whiteboard to review the workout our fearless leader, Cara, has programmed for us that day. We talk about the warm up, how we will prepare for the metcon (which stands for metabolic conditioning, i.e., the cardio portion of the day!), and points of performance for all the movements involved.

  • Each class is coached, not coach-led. The difference between the two is simple: a coach-led class will begin the same, but rather than give individual instruction, the coach will simply be present for assistance if asked. Here at Ergon Elite Fitness, our coaches are not only equipped with the skills but also possess the desire to further the abilities of all athletes in the room. We seek to coach individuals from where they are to where they want to be. We are armed with an arsenal of drills, ideas, strategies, modifications, scaling options, and for our athletes aiming for all the CrossFit movements - the progressions. We will guide you through each class, all you need to do is show up with a willingness to learn and be taught

  • Athletes will start and end each piece of the workout as one singular group, from the strength piece, to the metcon, and ending with mobility during the cooldown.

  • We do our best to release our athletes right on the hour, so come prepared to stay for the duration of class, and leave knowing you have a whole community rooting for you to push yourself to a higher level of fitness and overall well being!
